UH-Downtown partners with national institute to double graduation rate
Graduates of College of Humanities and Social Sciences and College of Public Service at the University of Houston-Downtown wave at family and friends while walking toward their seats before the graducation commencement Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022, at Minute Maid Park in Houston. 2,500 students graduated from the school this semester.
“If we can make sure that we’re meeting the state mark and perhaps even exceeding it, then it sets the stage for others to do the same,” he said. Harrison Keller, commissioner of the coordinating board, said he views UH-D’s work as crucial to growing Texas’ economy. While his agency currently has grants issued to 70 institutions for student success purposes, the Georgia State partnership could especially move the needle, he said.
Blanchard took the helm in spring 2021 and has persisted with growth despite physical limitations. Working to transform the university and create a sense of belonging for students at the commuter campus, he has launched a campaign to ease wayfinding around the university and has overseen the building of a new wellness and success center for students. He also hopes for more expansion with a new student union, parking garage and student housing.

But using data, universities can find where students are at risk of stopping out early on, proactively reaching out to them when they see students struggling in classes or reaching expiration dates for financial aid.
