Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, tribes say they aren't getting the help they need from the federal government. 'Sometimes the first citizens of this country are at the bottom of the list when it comes to federal aid,' says Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez
On many reservations, health care facilities are already chronically underfunded, but coronavirus has stretched limited resources to the brink. A public health crisis has forced tribes to close businesses and a rapid economic downturn has exasperated poverty."It is a perfect storm. Storm clouds pass over one of many rural homes on the Navajo reservation, which do not have electricity or running water during the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020 in Cameron, Arizona. "It has been one of the things that has driven me to ensure that our native people that we are seen and we are heard and we are valued, and that none of us are a statistic," Flanagan said.
