Happy Birthday, Amelia Earhart!
A majority, if not most, of Earhart’s career was defined by pushing society’s rigid boundaries, making a place for herself in a man’s world without asking permission. This sentiment is echoed throughout her accomplishments and as a writer. In 1936, Earhart said she hoped her accomplishment would inspire a future of female aviators.
“My ambition is to have this wonderful gift produce practical results for the future of commercial flying and for the women who may want to fly tomorrow’s planes,” . Of course, decades of speculation surrounding Earhart’s disappearance have hovered over the pilot’s history-making achievements.Bram Kleppner, Earhart’s great-nephew, whose grandmother was Earhart’s younger sister, Grace Muriel Earhart, tellshis family has spent the past couple years reviving the famed pilot’s legacy as an activist and a feminist. His mother , Amy M. Kleppner, Ph.D., is currently writing a book on her aunt’s participation in movements in and out of the sky.
“Amelia was a great flier and adventurer, and she was also a great advocate for women's rights, education for girls and women, and careers for women,” Kleppner tellsFor his grandmother, whom he says was incredibly close to Earhart as a young girl, she honored her sister with a portrait of her “festooned with a lei from Hawaii.” In his own home, however, he says his mother avoided any “Amelia-related images or even books” for a long time.
“My grandmother told me that when she and Amelia were little girls, it became fashionable for people to harness their horses' heads pulled way back,” Kleppner describes. “This bit of animal cruelty in the service of fashion struck Amelia and my grandmother as just plain wrong, so the two little girls snuck around Atchison, cutting check reins with their pocket knives.
