AmaZulu are at risk of losing out on Baroka defender Bonginkiso Makume after the clubs failed to reach an agreement, the Durban-based outfit was initially the front runner for Makume’s signature having shown the most serious intent, but the two clubs failed to reach an agreement over a transfer fee during talks held last week.
The stumbling block during negotiations is understood to be the two clubs’ valuation of the 26-year-old defender. AmaZulu are unwilling to pay a hefty amount for a player who will soon be out of contract should Baroka fail to sell. On the other hand, Baroka rate Makume highly, and while they are willing to sell, they have made it clear that they would not be selling cheaply.Despite Baroka’s relegation to the GladAfrica Championship, Makume was one of the stand-out performers and collected five DStv Premiership Man of The Match awards during his 20 appearances for the club. He also captained the side in several matches in the later stages of the 2021/22 season.
AmaZulu may still submit an improved offer but will have to act quickly. Sekhukhune United, Richards Bay and Orlando Pirates have all shown interest in the player.
