Inside the life of an Amazon warehouse manager: 'Drinking through the fire hose, underwater, while a group of people try to prevent you from coming up for air'
Amazon warehouse managers say they're under"intense pressure" to hit unrealistic goals at the retail giant's fulfillment centers.
Insider spoke to nine current and former warehouse managers. They described a tough workplace with long hours and little reward. The memo was startling enough to grab the attention of Ofori Agboka, an Amazon HR vice president who oversees much of the company's warehouse and delivery operations. In a separate email to his team, reviewed by Insider, Agboka noted that this sentiment could be found in any of the Amazon facilities in the world and asked his colleagues to come up with ideas on how to"overcome many of the points raised" by the warehouse manager.
Insider spoke to nine current and former Amazon warehouse managers about their working conditions, who described a workplace with long hours and low pay, disorganized data, and an abrasive culture of hitting increasingly lofty goals that often trickles down to the front line workers. Most spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press or feared retaliation in their current roles if they criticized Amazon.
The pressure to hit goals only intensifies during the peak holiday season, typically the last two months of the year that include big shopping events likeand Christmas. In a warehouse in Connecticut, one manager said his team estimated a 20% increase in the number of products shipped out this recent holiday season compared to the off-peak period.
"You couldn't walk away," they said."We'd start at 4:30 or 5am, and work until noonish. I couldn't eat or drink. I barely had time to go to the bathroom."
