In the early days of live TV sports broadcasts in Canada, Spence became a household name, working alongside Johnny Esaw for Canadian Football League games and as the original play-by-play voice for the Toronto Toros of the World Hockey Association.Article content “He was a good guy, with a good sense of humour, too,” said former 67’s coach and general manager Brian Kilrea, who saw more than his share of reporters come and go during his 35-year Hall of Fame career behind the bench. “He used to come down to the room sometimes. In a battle to cancel a credit card in 2009, Spence needed to speak for himself over the telephone in order to avoid a $25 fee. Without a voice, that became a problem. It was a humiliating experience for someone who made his living talking. Eventually, after the story was told in the Citizen, the credit card company apologized for their treatment of Spence.Article content“He battled cancer a few times, but he was still sharp as a wit.
