Jordan Thompson had been struggling the entire College World Series, and it looked like the same old thing Monday as he strode to the plate in the second inning of the title game between LSU and Florida.

Thompson, a Helix High School grad, was 1 for 30 with 14 strikeouts over the first seven games. He had a two-strike count with two runners on and the Tigers down two runs to Florida.Thompson ripped an RBI single to left, finished the game with two hits and three RBIs and LSU raced past the Gators 18-4 to claim the national title.

“I love Jordan Thompson,” LSU coach Jay Johnson, who played at Point Loma Nazarene, coached the Sea Lions in 2005 and was an assistant to Rich Hill at USD, said before Monday’s game. “We wouldn’t be in the College World Series without Jordan and how he has played this year. “He has had a tough tournament offensively, but there have been a lot of stories of guys who struggle, struggle, struggle and then get a big hit for you, make a big play.Thompson ripped a shot down the left-field line that scored a run to give the Tigers a 7-2 lead. He added an RBI sacrifice fly in the eighth.Thompson hit .246 LSU with 11 homers, 12 doubles and 50 RBIs, starting all 71 games for a team that finished 54-17, winning a national title after being the preseason No. 1.
