The DA made several proposals to drastically reduce the government's ballooning debt. It includes cutting down on VIP security and spending less on catering, accommodation and entertainment. | JasonFelix

Cut down on VIP security for politicians, terminate the R1 billion Tottenham Hotspur sponsorship deal, and spend less on catering, accommodation and entertainment for government events.

These initiatives are part of a wide-ranging plan proposed by the DA to arrest the government's debt, which has ballooned from just 27% of gross domestic product in 2008 to 71.4%, or R4.35 trillion, in 2022/23. Added to this, debt-service costs over the medium-term, the DA believes, are expected to average R333.4 billion annually.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
