Fernando Alonso showed the potential to be an F1 champion on his Grand Prix debut in 2001 and in his Formula 3000 triumph the previous year at Spa, reckons ex-Minardi boss Paul Stoddart ⬇️
podcast, Stoddart reflected on Alonso's rookie season as the Spaniard joined Minardi at the age of 19.
He explained that a misunderstanding over a warm-up"glory lap" may have put Alonso in the mood to go all-out in the 2001 finale, where he fended off Heinz-Harald Frentzen's Prost to finish a strong 11th. "That was all agreed with me. I was called to a team principal's meeting while Sunday warm-up was going on and for whatever reason, Fernando and his engineer had disagreed about him having a glory run.
"If anyone looks at the history of that race in Suzuka, Fernando put in 53 qualifying laps. If ever the world needed to know how good he was, look at the tapes!"Stoddart said that he first became aware of Alonso as a competitor in the 2000 F3000 season; the Australian's European Arrows squad with lead driver Mark Webber frequently battled against the Astromega-run car piloted by Alonso.
