In June, District Attorney George Gascon and other officials gathered with great fanfare at Jordan High School in Watts to announceagainst Atlas Iron & Metal Co., which is accused of having deposited toxic waste on the school campus for years.

The community coalition that drew attention to the problems asked the judge to issue an order for Atlas to cease operations while the criminal case is pending, but the judge did not do so.

The Los Angeles Unified School District is also calling for the plant to close. The district filed a lawsuit against Atlas in 2020 seeking relief from the health hazards and costs incurred as a result of hazardous waste being dumped on Jordan’s campus. “Courts in criminal matters across California fashion orders every day that simultaneously respect the principle of innocence until proven guilty while preventing future harm to victims of crime,” wrote the coalition. “We are gravely concerned that simply releasing the defendants in this matter on bail does nothing to stop this community from the ongoing harm and contamination that continues to be caused by Atlas’ operations.
