Michael Hillier and Rachel Fulstow deny the murder of Liam Smith
A couple accused of murder were told to ‘rot in hell’ when a disturbance broke out in court as a gunman recounted opening fire. Michael Hillier has admitted shooting 38-year-old electrician Liam Smith outside his home in Wigan. The dad-of-two was then doused in acid.
Hillier claimed that the couple formed a plan to attack Mr Smith after she alleged to him that she’d been ‘graphically raped’ in 2019. Hillier said: “The plan was immediate, it was decided straight away that something was going to happen to Liam Smith.” He told the court that he bought a blank firing gun and converted it after carrying out ‘experiments’. “It wasn’t intended to cause grievous bodily harm or kill, it was intended just to stun him,” Hillier said.
He said that when he first arrived he believed Mr Smith may not have been in the house as there was no movement. Hillier told the jury that he got out of the car and walked down the drive before seeing Mr Smith inside the house. Hillier said he then drove ‘somewhere near Darlington’, abandoned the car and cycled to the train station, before boarding a train to York then taking a taxi to Ms Fulstow’s home. He said of when he arrived: “Rachel was hugging and kissing me, she was very emotional.
