Rishi Sunak will make a pledge to 'reimagine our approach to numeracy' as part of his first speech of 2023.
"Right now, just half of all 16-year-olds study any maths at all. Yet in a world where data is everywhere and statistics underpin every job, our children's jobs will require more analytical skills than ever before."
The pledge appears to be a watered-down version of an education policy from last summer's Conservative leadership contest. Labour's shadow education secretary, Bridget Phillipson, criticised the plan, calling on Mr Sunak to"show his working".
