AllOfUsAreDead is topping the Netflix charts, becoming the second K-Drama to do so after Squid Game took the world by storm late last year.
All of Us Are Dead has become the second Korean-language series to hit #1 on the Netflix weekly charts. Netflix first scored a major South Korean hit with the dystopian thriller Squid Game, which followed a group of adults gathered to play a series of deadly children's games while competing for a massive payout. The series premiered on September 17, 2021 and instantly became a massive success, eventually rising to become the #1 most-watched television series on Netflix ever.
All Of Us Are Dead is now the newest South Korean darling on the streaming platform. The show, which was created by Lee Jae-kyoo, Chun Sung-il, and Kim Nam-su, is based on the 2009 webtoon Now At Our School and premiered its 12-episode season 1 on January 28, 2022. The series, which stars Park Ji-hu, Yoon Chan-young, Cho Yi-hyun, Park Solomon, Yoo In-soo, Lee Yoo-mi, and Im Jae-hyuk, follows a group of high school students attempting to survive a zombie apocalypse.
Netflix has been making content for international audiences for years, including hit series like the Spanish crime drama Money Heist and the Swedish teen show Young Royals. However, that content is usually siloed out into its own territory and successful in non-domestic streaming markets like the new Bollywood film Looop Lapeta, which began streaming yesterday but has not made a splash on the U.S. side of the service.
All of Us Are Dead is rising at a slower burn than its predecessor, but it is spelling good things for the success of future K-dramas in the international market, especially the U.S. Historically, mainstream American audiences only periodically embrace foreign pop culture from certain territories for short periods without necessarily following that with a subsequent rise in interest in the long-term.
