Rings of Power’s Tolkien characters explained.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Amazon Prime's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power uses a handful of characters that were created for the show, while also integrating several from the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien. Set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, The Rings of Power chronicles the re-emergence of the evil Sauron that leads to the War of the Last Alliance seen in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring's prologue.

13 Elrond Another of The Rings of Power's central characters is Elrond. Played in the show by Robert Aramayo, Elrond is also a much younger version of the character portrayed by Hugo Weaving in Jackson's movies. As such, The Rings of Power highlights Elrond's much more light-hearted side than the weary version in Jackson's trilogy. This ties to Tolkien's works also, with Elrond's involvement in the Second Age coming from the author's appendices.

11 Celebrimbor Naturally then, Celebrimbor is also a character from Tolkien's writings in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. In Tolkien's original work, Celebrimbor is primarily remembered as the smith responsible for crafting the elven Rings of Power. In the TV show of the same name, Celebrimbor is shown as exactly that.

8 Isildur The Númenórean son of Elendil, Isildur is an integral character in Tolkien's books and The Rings of Power. Isildur is widely known as the man who defeated Sauron in the War of the Last Alliance, cutting the Ring of Power from the dark lord's hand and taking it for himself. Isildur then failed to destroy the One Ring, kickstarting the events of the Third Age that lead to the War of the Ring.

5 Pharazôn In The Rings of Power, Pharazôn is shown as the key advisor and chancellor to the ruling family of Númenor. This is a change from Tolkien's books, which portray Pharazôn as a seafaring, military leader. This will likely come with The Rings of Power's future seasons, with the end of season 1 hinting at Pharazôn securing power in Númenor after the death of Palantir, much like his book counterpart.

3 Morgoth While not a major character in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Morgoth's shadow looms over season 1. The prologue of the show includes Morgoth and the War of the Jewels against him, resulting in his defeat. Morgoth's lieutenant, Sauron, then took up his master's mission of dominating Middle-earth which is told in the Second and Third Ages of Middle-earth.
