Alexander Zverev defeated Shang Juncheng 6-0, 6-3 at the China Open to reach the quarterfinals, where he will face Novak Djokovic. Elena Rybakina suffered a shock loss.
Alexander Zverev secured a dominant 6-0, 6-3 victory over home hope Shang Juncheng at the China Open on Saturday, setting up a quarterfinal showdown with Novak Djokovic. The German top seed needed just 55 minutes to dispatch the 21-year-old Chinese wildcard, ranked 250th, firing nine aces. The win propels Zverev into a highly anticipated clash with Djokovic, who has never lost a match in Beijing, on Sunday.
Zverev's Dominant Performance and Title Ambitions
Zverev expressed satisfaction with his win, noting that his opponent was dangerous and had nothing to lose. The world number two is now focused on his upcoming match and the broader goal of challenging Jannik Sinner for the top ranking. Sinner, who won in Beijing last year, is absent this time and has also withdrawn from next week's Shanghai Masters. Zverev acknowledged that reaching number one is a clear goal and that he is highly motivated, but he remains focused on the immediate challenge against Djokovic.
In other men's action, third seed Daniil Medvedev advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Jan-Lennard Struff and will face Francisco Cerundolo. Fifth seed Alex de Minaur and Andrey Rublev both needed three sets to advance and will play each other in the quarterfinals.
Rybakina Stunned in Beijing Opener
In the women's draw, world number one Elena Rybakina was upset by 118th-ranked Alina Charaeva in the second round. The 27-year-old from Kazakhstan was playing her first match since clinching the top ranking with her US Open victory in New York, but Charaeva, from Armenia, triumphed 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Rybakina struggled with seven double-faults and windy conditions inside the closed-roof stadium. She later said it was a tough day and mentioned foot trouble and the effects of a lot going on since her New York win. Charaeva described the win as a dream come true and will next face Briton Sonay Kartal.
Gauff, Svitolina, Swiatek Advance; Zheng Rebukes Fans
World number four Coco Gauff fought past Camila Osorio 7-6 (7/4), 4-6, 6-2, overcoming shaky serving to reach the third round. Sixth-seeded Elina Svitolina and former champion Iga Swiatek, seeded eighth, also progressed. Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen advanced when opponent Anna Kalinskaya retired with injury after Zheng won 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 3-0. During the match, Zheng twice told spectators to stop shouting as she served and later said her emotions were not stable due to movement in the crowd. She will face Czech player Marie Bouzkova next.
