It was a case of something old and something new when sweethearts Alex and Jane Hamilton tied the knot… 60 years after becoming engaged.
Jane, now 89, used an electric wheelchair to come down the aisle while Alex, 90, met her at the altar in his finest tartan. But they could not stay apart and, six years later, decided to start life together in Alex’s home city of Edinburgh. But after having a further two children and running a business, saying ‘I do’ fell off the to-do list.
Joining the celebrations were their two daughters Sally and Kate, Alex’s sons Gordon and Neil and Jane’s daughter Beverley, as well as their 11 grandchildren.‘This was a major celebration. It was really beautiful.’ She described her parents as ‘unconventional’ for cohabiting during a time when it was not the social norm.
But she said: ‘If we go out, the two of them are looking across the table at each other. They are always so cheeky. It’s like having a new boyfriend only they’ve been like that 60 years.’They decided to ‘make it official’ with the event in Clackmannanshire It was where the pair first had a romantic break back in the 1960s.‘All our children and grandchildren came, with my eldest granddaughter as my maid of honour and Alex’s son as his best man.
