The president and National Command Council for Covid-19 sent an emphatic letter to the Gauteng Liquor Forum about keeping the ban on alcohol
President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphatically denied a request from the Gauteng Liquor Forum to ease the restrictions on the sale of alcohol during the nationwide lockdown.
Also, he said in a letter sent through the State Attorney, that the sale of alcohol is “not an essential service” and that selling it would impact negatively on the country’s battle against the Covid-19 pandemic. Alcohol abuse is also responsible for an increase in crime and a major reason for medical emergencies.
The extension of the lockdown — in combination with the total ban on alcohol sales — would “most likely ruin” these businesses, the forum said.In the letter Ramaphosa denied the request, saying that the ban on alcohol sales is in line with the government’s measures to address the pandemic.
“In the face of a pandemic such as Covid-19, the experience of the rest of the world has shown us that hospitals need to be prepared to receive and treat vast numbers of Covid-19 patients and to quarantine them from non-infected patients.social-distancing protocols and proper hygiene practices by reducing or eliminating the number of intoxicated people, in light of the experience of non-compliance by intoxicated people in general.
