Alberta wildfires: Smoke as bad as ever, but forecast heralds rainy relief abfire

“Smoke makes it difficult for us to fly and assess and action wildfires from the air, but it does create cooler conditions that can weaken fire behaviour,” said Christie Tucker, information unit manager with Alberta Wildfire.

Tucker said scattered showers were seen in the southwest corner and northern parts of the province on Saturday, though officials were concerned about the potential for lightning strikes to spark additional fires. Tucker said lightning was seen around Edson and Grande Prairie, prompting patrols to be sent out to investigate.Article content

“What we would like to see is a long, steady rain … something that will soak into the forest floor. Some of those fires out there are in peat, which means they can burn down as well as across, and that means they can be very difficult to put out in the short term. We are looking for some moisture that is really going to soak the ground.”Article contentshows 86 active fires as of midday Sunday, including 23 classified as out of control.

One section highway remains shut down due to the fires: Highway 43 between Fox Creek and Little Smoky. The fire danger is still categorized as very high to extreme in northern Alberta and high to very high along the eastern slopes of the Rockies. As a result, several provincial parks and recreation areas have been shut down.
