Alberta wildfires: Rain may offer relief as Alberta rallies to battle wildfires abfire

Both Tucker and Colin Blair, executive director of Alberta Emergency Management Agency are due to update the province on the rapidly evolving wildfire threat Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.In a Saturday report, Alberta Wildfire had it’s eye on 13 wildfires burning in the province, including a blaze 14 kilometres southeast of Edson is burning out of control and spanning nearly 78,000 hectares.

Also of east of Edmonton, two human-caused wildfires are burning out of control. One reached 8,586 hectares from an area southeast of Evansburg to land north of Wildwood, crossing Highway 16. The other was burning about seven kilometres northwest of Evansburg and reaching across Highway 22 at 2,700 hectares, although firefighters had contained 65 per cent of the blaze. Helicopters and heavy equipment were working in the area as well as 80 wildland firefighters.

The Town of Rainbow Lake, about 130 kilometres west of High Level, issued an evacuation order as more than 2,000 hectares burned south of the community. Heavy equipment, helicopters and 44 firefighters have responded. The fire appears to have grown to 16,000 hectares. Farther south, heavy equipment was helping to build a guard around an 8,500 hectare fire in Clear Hills County, which also appears to have grown to more than 10,000 hectares.
