The haze is not a health concern, at least for people in Ontario.

The air quality in downtown Ottawa was rated as “low risk” according to Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks monitoring on Wednesday.Article content

Tiny particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 microns or less can pose issues for breathing as they can travel deep into the respiratory tract, and forest fires can produce particles of this size. However, these particles are too high in the atmosphere to cause a concern for people in Ontario, Coulson said.

“Areas closest to the fires in portions of Alberta and British Columbia are experiencing poor air quality due to their proximity to the fires and to the smoke being close to the surface,” he said. “As the smoke travels further from the fires, it rises in the atmosphere and disperses. By the time the smoke from the fires in Alberta moves over Ontario, it’s a number of kilometres up in the atmosphere and not near the surface. Therefore, there are no surface air quality concerns in Ontario from the Alberta wildfires,” he said

Coulson expects the smoke particles will travel eastward with the wind patterns and be gone from Ontario by this weekend or next week.“It has been an incredibly active season. From scanning social media, you can see that people are interested in something that happened so far away that can be seen here.”
