“If a municipality is interested in taking federal money in the hiring of municipal employees to be confiscation agents, no, we have great concerns.”Bill 8 would also give the province the ability to regulate and license those who’d seize firearms, but Shandro made it clear his government is opposed to any such confiscations beyond current criminal gun use.Article content
“We don’t think there should be anyone involved in being engaged as a seizure agent for the confiscation program,” he told reporters.Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek has voiced concerns in recent months that provincial legislation meant to head off federal laws deemed harmful to Alberta would amount to incursions into municipal jurisdiction.
Shandro, who called the federal gun legislation an “intrusion” into provincial jurisdiction, said he’s confident Bill 8 would survive a court challenge.Bill 8 would also create a provincial committee to ensure gun owners receive proper compensation if firearms are seized under federal legislation, said Shandro.
