“I was shocked,” Cooke said. “The whole time in the back of my mind I was thinking ‘damn, I hope these settings are good,’ because I had no time to change them. I was just praying the pictures turned out,” he added.
“That is supposed to be the best wolverine habitat south of the Arctic,” he said. “The fact that there is a decline suggests there are some problems going on.”While there is more work being done to pin down the population of these animals, Fisher said it is currently unknown how many wolverines there are in the wild.
Unlike other animals, it’s difficult to tag a wolverine and track its movements. More often, most of the research done on the animals is through remote cameras and DNA tracking. Researchers will install a wide array of cameras covering 10,000 to 20,000 square kilometres, alongside a series of hair traps.Article content
“The fact they have survived for tens of thousands of years in some of the most hostile environments on Earth, these animals are tanks,” Fisher added.
