Notley’s NDP will be fighting for re-election against Jason Kenney’s United Conservative Party
Alberta Premier Rachel Notley, left, and Alberta Lt.-Gov. Lois Mitchell come out of the House after the throne speech in Edmonton on Monday March 18, 2019.Alberta Premier Rachel Notley has called an election for April 16, launching a campaign at a time when the province’s economy is struggling under an oil downturn that has stretched over her entire term in office.
Mr. Kenney has spent weeks rolling out policy announcements on a wide array of issues, including corporate tax cuts, promises to cut regulations he says amount to red tape, and cancelling recent NDP announcements such as a plan to lease rail cars to ship oil. Ms. Notley, in contrast, had said little about what new policies she would put before Albertans until a Throne Speech on Monday, which will likely form the backbone of the New Democrats’ platform.
The province’s oil sector has struggled in the face of low prices compared with U.S. markets. The discount, or differential, between Alberta oil and West Texas Intermediate topped US$50 a barrel last fall. Prices have narrowed since production cuts took effect on Jan 1, bouncing around between US$10 and US$14.
