Alberta Municipalities call for public safety task force as RCMP launch new community safety and well-being branch ableg abpoli

A task force would need to have a mandate that develops models and solutions to improve public safety throughout the province, the association said, regardless of who delivers community policing. It would not be supported if its mandate is focused on how to transition to an Alberta provincial police force.NDP justice critic Irfan Sabir said in a statement the official Opposition would support a task force but he has concerns it could be used to further the provincial police service.
“We know that the recommendations from Alberta’s communities are being heard by RCMP, and that adjustments to the way it delivers contract policing are being made,” the group said. “Alberta Municipalities is confident that the RCMP are adapting and making great strides in community policing.” The new branch, which was formalized about a year ago, puts a prominent focus on partnerships to address the root causes of crime.
RCMP will partner with government agencies, non-government organizations, and community and volunteer groups. One such partnership is with Alberta Health Services , forming regional police and crisis teams.
