Members of the HSAA have approved a tentative deal with the provincial health authority that could see pay increases of 4.25 per cent over four years.

The union announced Monday in a news release that 85 per cent of members who voted accepted the deal, which will go before the Alberta Health Services board for a vote on Thursday. It comes after months of bargaining and after the COVID-19 pandemic forced two years of delays. The HSAA confirmed 49 per cent of members cast a vote.across a dozen professions, including an almost 11 per cent wage rollback for social workers and pharmacy technicians.

The new agreement covers April 1, 2020 through March 31, 2024, and includes a pay increase of one per cent retroactive to October 1, 2021, and bumps of 1.25 per cent on September 1, 2022 and two per cent on April 1, 2023. Parker said the agreement also included progress on benefits and other work-life balance provisions, including a new mental health support program.Parker said the negotiations were very “government-involved,” something he called “unheard of.” The government is expected to comment once the board comes to a decision Thursday.Article content“We’re in a competition that is not just provincial. This is a national competition for health-care experts in all disciplines and assets,” he said.

The chairwoman of the union’s bargaining committee, Leanne Alfaro, said in the news release that despite the gains made in the agreement, “we feel this government and AHS still have a long way to go to fully express the appreciation that our members deserve for their sacrifices,” said Alfaro.
