Alberta handed out $657 million in COVID relief with little oversight: report yyc abpoli ableg

Auditor general Doug Wylie, in an interview with Postmedia on Friday, highlighted the Small and Medium Enterprise Relaunch Grant program, which only put 1,055 of 101,762 approved applicants through a post-payment verification process.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

None of the 96,300 low-risk applicants, accounting for more than $609 million, have been put through the verification process. “We have every reason to believe that overall this program had very high compliance and it would be a poor use of taxpayers dollars to stop the work of the department to scrutinize 50,000 plus applications on a program that achieved its important purpose,” he said in his statement.

“Our recommendation to government is, this was desperately needed relief for businesses in a very, very difficult time,” she said. ” And if the relief was provided in good faith by the government, and if there was a government error . . . then they shouldn’t be recalling any of that grant funding.” However, for its 11 strategic capital projects, only $144 million of the forecasted $1.12 billion of funding was spent on shovel-ready projects in those two years of health orders. Part of the delay was due to supply chain issues, but it calls into question the province’s definition of shovel-ready or construction-ready when several of the projects are still in the design phase — missing the objective of stimulating the economy during the pandemic.
