Wood Buffalo RCMP began investigating Janvier, 54, on Feb. 25 after they received a complaint about sexual assault. Police then arrested Janvier on June 3, said a Wednesday statement from Wood Buffalo RCMP.
Court documents accuse Janvier of committing a sexual assault and breach of trust between Jan. 1, 2004 and Dec. 31, 2008. Janvier is accused of committing a second sexual assault and breach of trust between Jan. 1, 2020, and Dec. 31, 2021. He is also accused of threatening to harm a woman and her family “with intent to obtain her refusal to report sexual assault.
Janvier has been charged with two counts each of sexual assault and breach of trust, and one count of extortion without a firearm. Janvier has been chief of the First Nation since 2007. The community is located roughly 125 kilometres south of Fort McMurray and adjacent to the municipal hamlet of Janvier.
