"We are concerned that we are seeing, likely, a new wave develop right now from the BA.5 sub-variant of Omicron," Premier Jason Kenney said Tuesday
The provincial government announced the expanded eligibility on Tuesday afternoon, following Ontario and B.C., where additional boosters were also rolled out in recent days.
Adults who received their third vaccine at least five months ago can sign up for the booster at a pharmacy or by using the Alberta vaccine booking system. The news comes just hours after Premier Jason Kenney promised news on the fourth dose while speaking to media at an opening event for an Edmonton pharmaceutical distribution centre.
Kenney said the provincial COVID cabinet committee just received recommendations from the chief medical officer of health, and also reviewed the most recent National Advisory Committee on Immunization guidance. “We are concerned that we are seeing, likely, a new wave develop right now from the BA.5 sub-variant of Omicron,” he said. The Alberta government said in a news release that the fourth dose “is of most benefit to those at high risk of severe outcomes.”
