An Alberta\u002Dbased clinic is participating in a first\u002Dof\u002Dits\u002Dkind study exploring how psilocybin may help treat alcohol use disorder.

“It’s the ability to let go of some of the things that might be keeping somebody in a depressed and guilt-ridden state of mind that leads to perpetuation of addictive behaviours,” he said. “That’s what we think is going on with psilocybin and then, I think, you could say the same thing about psychedelics in general, but I think that’s why there’s hope for psilocybin in this area.

Current treatment for alcohol use disorder is limited. While there is Alcoholics Anonymous and recovery communities, as well as emerging pharmacologic agents, he said there aren’t a lot of treatments that are considered effective and meet the standard of evidence to say they will reduce the amount of alcohol an individual is drinking or change their relationship with it.Article content

If the treatment works, it could help someone who has multiple drinks a day reduce it to one or two a day.
