Alaskan youth sue state to block proposed natural gas pipeline project citing health, climate concernsPublished: May. 28, 2024 at 4:02 PM AKDTANCHORAGE, Alaska - Saying a state policy promoting fossil fuels violates their constitutional rights by putting their health at risk, eight young Alaskans have filed a lawsuit to halt a state-sponsored natural gas pipeline project.

The plaintiffs in the case range from ages 11 to 22. Their complaint states that the natural gas project would elevate climate pollution in the state by emitting 2.3 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide as it moves 3.9 billion cubic feet of fossil gas per day for at least 30 years. The plaintiffs argue the project would further exacerbate the impact of climate change on their lives, citing everything from floods and wildfires to the effects on hunting and fishing.

Seventeen-year-old Jamie T. of Akiuk, Kasigluk is also named in the complaint, saying, the “thawing of permafrost from climate pollution is also causing Jamie’s house to sink into the tundra.”
