JUNEAU, Alaska - With less than 30 days until the end of the legislative session, Alaska lawmakers say they are working to balance the state budget — but gaps still exist between the House and Senate.

Sen. Bert Stedman, co-chair of the Senate Finance Committee, said lawmakers will hear public testimony on Thursday and Friday on the operating budget, but added that the capital budget is “pretty skinny.”Both the House and Senate are still debating how to fund education, with aEarlier this month, members of the House minorityand had to be asked to return to continue proceedings after a disagreement on the structure of Alaska’s education funding.

“Many of us are certainly very supportive of education in my caucus,” Stevens said. “Others have a few more questions about how that money will be used.” “Those are all discussions that we are having, and we will solve this by the end of the day,” Stevens said.
