The settlement is the second-largest ever for a violation of the Jones Act, the Justice Department said.
Boats are docked at the Carl E. Moses Boat Harbor on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2022 in Dutch Harbor. The Port of Dutch Harbor is one of the country's largest fishing ports by volume.
The Jones Act requires merchandise that is shipped between American ports to travel on American-flagged vessels. An exception allows seafood from Alaska to be transported to the mainland U.S. if it travels along Canadian rail. The trucks rode the length of the rail, and returned, before being driven off the train cars and proceeding directly to a border crossing in Maine for final shipments across the Lower 48, it said.
