The Alaska Art Alliance helps Alaska Native Carvers earn an income and sell their wares.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A unique program is helping Alaska Native men become skillful carvers and — in some cases — earn enough income to get them off the streets.
Leon Kinneeveauk founded the Art Alliance in 2018 after spending more than a dozen years in prison. Originally from Point Hope, Kinneeveauk said he lost his way after moving to Anchorage and didn’t really start connecting with his culture until he got to prison. Kinneeveauk was released in 2015, and by 2018 had become so successful selling his carvings that he decided to open a space where other Native men could come and carve for free.
For the first few years, Kinneeveauk paid for expenses out of his own pocket, but when COVID hit, it set him back.Native Heritage President Emily Edenshaw said donors saw the value in giving Native people a place to be off the streets, connecting with their art and culture.
