The caucus is expected to pick between Rep. Steve Clouse of Ozark, the longtime chair of the House General Fund budget committee, and Rep. Nathaniel Ledbetter of Rainsville,The full House membership, including the Democratic caucus, will officially elect the speaker during the Legislature’s organizational session in January. But Republicans hold 77 seats in the 105-member House so the pick of the GOP caucus today is all but certain to win the job.

“Growing up, my mom told me if you weren’t five minutes early you were late,” Ledbetter said. “So one thing we’ll do in the House is we’ll always get going on time. That’s just me. I’m not reflecting on anybody negatively at all because Mac did an outstanding job. That’s just how I’m going to do because I get very antsy if I’m late or think I’m going to be late.”

“But also I think that sometimes we run a little bit slow. I’m going to be a little bit more prompt. I will start our session days on time and try to get our work taken care of.”as speaker after Hubbard was removed from office for felony ethics convictions in 2016. The Legislature was also dealing with a scandal involving Gov. Robert Bentley. The House would start impeachment proceedings against Bentley before he resigned in April 2017.

Ledbetter worked for the Sand Mountain Electric Cooperative for more than 30 years. He and his wife were also in the newspaper business and owned the Mountain Valley News in Rainsville, which they sold a few years ago. Ledbetter, who was elected to the House in 2014, said he believes he has shown the ability to keep the House caucus organized during his time as majority leader.
