The Quebec Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes is involved with the investigation into an Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service officer’s use of his service weapon on Friday.

AMPS Chief Shawn Dulude confirmed to CBC News on Tuesday that he called in the bureau, which has tasked the Sûreté du Québec with an internal investigation into the Friday incident. The BEI is the agency that provides oversight to police services in Quebec, similar to the oversight provided to police services in Ontario by the Special Investigations Unit.

An AMPS statement released Saturday on the incident has been thrown into question by some witnesses and lawyer Keith Gordon, along with a partial security camera video that has been shared on social media. Police said officers recognized a suspect wanted in a 2020 arrest warrant, and when she refused to exit her vehicle police said she drove towards and struck one of the officers. It was that officer who fired off two shots from his service weapon.

The points under contention are the order in which the events occurred, and whether the officer should have drawn and fired his weapon. Gordon is calling on AMPS to release any body worn camera or dashcam video, and its protocols for when officers should draw their weapons.SOUTH GLENGARRY — One person is currently in police custody as an investigation continues after an SDG OPP traffic stop on Highway 401 that closed the eastbound lanes for most of Tuesday.

SDG OPP said the traffic stop, for speeding, was done around 6:30 a.m. Officers alleged they spotted a handgun and a device they suspected might be an explosive. The eastbound lanes were closed between mile markers 796 — Boundary Road, and 804 — County Road 27, with emergency detour routes in effect.Recommended from Editorial
