Chancellor's wife Akshata Murty could save £280m in UK tax thanks to loophole created by UK-India treaty dating from 1950s
Nevertheless, the very significant sums Ms Murty could have saved up to now - and may save in the future - pose some awkward questions for Rishi Sunak.
On reported dividends of £11.5m from £700m worth of shares, Ms Murty would have paid tax at 39.5% as a UK citizen, which works out as £4.5m. It is not known whether Murty holds these shares through a company based in a Mauritius or any other tax haven.
