AHS says an inspection at 321 Squirrel Street late last month revealed conditions potentially \u0022injurious or dangerous to the public health.\u0022

Alberta Health Services says an inspection at 321 Squirrel Street late last month revealed conditions potentially “injurious or dangerous to the public health.” The health authority said 42 beds or mattresses were found in the property, well above the maximum occupancy of 16, as well as multiple other conditions in breach of Alberta’s housing standards, including holes in walls, leaky faucets in need of repair and a tenant sleeping in a basement room with no window.

“Unfortunately, this property still failed to comply and continued to have unsuitable living arrangements,” said town planning director Darren Enns. “This just speaks to how limited folks’ options are and the lack of affordable housing that exists here,” said Ebony Rempel, CEO of YWCA Banff. Enns said town council has a priority to create more affordable housing in Banff. He mentioned the Banff Housing Corporation — the town’s arm’s-length, non-profit housing organization — recently opened an affordable rental building in 2018; another is slated for completion this coming spring; and, planning is underway for another. Private businesses also continue to re-develop properties to help house their workers, he said.

“We certainly need more affordable housing in Banff and we will continue to explore opportunities to add to the housing stock,” she said. The order for 321 Squirrel Street initially named three people as owners of the property: Jacqueline Rogers, Hannah-Maree Wilson and Gail Morgan. Rogers, who runs a bed and breakfast at nearby 312 Squirrel Street, told Postmedia she and Wilson, her mother, were wrongfully included on the initial order and have never had any association with the actioned property.Article content
