The most pessimistic projections put the N.L. population down 16% in 20 years. With the oldest average age and among the lowest fertility rates in Canada, immigration may be the only saviour for the province — provided newcomers stay. By juanitamercer_
Aging Newfoundland and Labrador is facing a bleak long-term 'population crisis' and while immigration is crucial, it's not the 'solution to everything'
Under every scenario, Newfoundland and Labrador is projected to experience a declining population into the 2040s. -Statistics Canada Minister of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills Gerry Byrne said the number of spaces allowed by the feds should be doubled. Fang’s research on the optimal level of immigration found it’s about one per cent of the population annually — that would be 5,200 immigrants for Newfoundland and Labrador.
Fang said we have no trouble attracting immigrants due to our friendly reputation, safe communities, relatively low cost of living compared to bigger Canadian cities, natural resources and natural beauty.Newfoundland and Labrador’s retention rate is among the lowest of all provinces. This means that a greater number of immigrants end up leaving this province to move elsewhere compared to immigrants to most other provinces.
Rob Greenwood, executive director of the Harris Centre, said most immigrants to the province settle in St. John’s, which does not increase the declining rural population.
