Aga's Restaurant, an Indian-Pakistani restaurant in Sugar Land, has achieved monumental success after new owners turned it around. Now, they want to share that success with future scholars.
Aga's scholarship winners pose with staff and others at Aga's Restaurant in Houston, Texas on Aug. 7, 2022.To hear Shaukat Maredia tell it, the Aga's of 2001 was a far cry from the thriving Indian-Pakistani restaurant it is now.
"Where we lived in Gujarat, the schools taught everything in Gujarati. When we moved to Mumbai, everything was taught in Hindi and English. All of this happened while I was in eighth grade, and it was very difficult to catch up. We were not financially well enough to afford tutors or special schools."
"My wife and I, when we had our first child, we always focused on education," he said."I told my wife, no matter what happened to you and me, our children would get the highest education." Over 250 students applied for a chance to win $2,500. All had to provide transcripts as well as answer questions about what they wanted to do in life and how they were going to help people.Arfa Momin, a graduate of Stephen F. Austin High School, learned about the scholarship through her dad. In her application, she wrote about her life in an apartment complex in Beaumont.
"It just showed that even where there is an absence of things, there is an abundance as well," she said.
