Adding insult to injury for true insomniacs are all those inane articles telling you how important it is to get your eight hours, then offering basic advice on sleep hygiene – winding down slowly, leaving your phone outside your bedroom, exercising, not drinking coffee after 4pm.My own insomnia began decades ago, starting before school exams, then progressing to the night before anything remotely stressful until it became part of every single night.
And so, in between all the fancy treatments, I turned to drugs. The only thing that worked was Phenergan, a pill which contains promethazine. I popped pills on and off for years, aware that according to a 2019 study from the University of Nottingham, promethazine is one of a family of anticholinergic drugs which has a strong link to dementia among people over the age of 55. Last summer, I decided it was time to go cold turkey.
Out came the earplugs and on went the sleep machine. And… I slept. Not only did the womb-like noise lull me into dreamland, but it kept me there. The traffic noise outside my window was lost, as was the sound of my son galumphing around late at night.
