The recent robberies occurred over the course of two days in Camden County, investigators said.
Leon I. Stanford, 54, of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty to two counts of bank robbery, federal prosecutors said. He is scheduled to be sentenced July 18.
Stanford was accused of holding up the TD Bank on White Horse Pike in Oaklyn on Feb. 22, and robbing a Republic Bank in Cherry Hill on Feb. 24, the office said. In both robberies, Stanford passed notes to bank tellers demanding money, authorities said. Witnesses also told investigators following both robberies that they saw him flee the scene in a white SUV.
Detectives were able to obtain a partial license plate number for the white SUV from surveillance videos in the area of both bank robberies, which generated a lead to a vehicle driven by Stanford, who was then identified as the person in the videos, investigators said. He was arrested on Feb. 25, 2020 and charged with two counts of second-degree robbery.
He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and was set free in August of 2018 and began a term of federal release. Court papers say he formerly worked in food services at a college in the Scranton area, and is originally from the Atlantic City area.
