After three days in the sixth heat, Kent Bensmiller is happy to be back where he belongs in the ninth heat
From Thursday to Sunday, he’s racing in the ninth heat of the Cowboys Rangeland Derby against fellow chuckwagon drivers Layne MacGillivray and Chanse Vigen.
From Monday to Wednesday, Bensmiller pulled into the infield in front of GMC Stadium and lined up next to his designated barrel in the second-last heat of the night. “He always has lots of run and he just kind of barrels in that right position, so he gets to be on the rail quite a bit and follows through and them horses are really running for him and he’s doing a good job. And Chanse Vigen is running unearthly right now, so it’s good to be with those guys.”
After Cody Risdale’s Ochiese Business Centre outfit won Heat 4, one of his horses, his left wheeler, fell to the track and was attended to by veterinarians. The horse eventually got up on his own and walked into a trailer and was transported back to the barns. Following Saturday’s races, the drivers with the three best times will advance to Sunday night’s championship heat.
“I think with us having those two years off, it hurt me, especially because I’ve always had a big rotation of new horses that came in with old ones,” he said. “We didn’t buy horses there for a couple years, so we’re behind that year rotation, so hopefully by next year we have things figured out a little bit better and we can get back to being a little more of a threat.”Article content
