Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador lashed out at Republican U.S. lawmakers who have proposed sending troops into Mexico, telling them that the United States should concentrate on curbing its rampant appetite for illegal drugs.
Pharmacies in several Mexican cities are selling counterfeit prescription pills laced with fentanyl and meth and passing them off as legitimate pharmaceuticals.
“Here we do not produce fentanyl and we do not consume fentanyl,” he insisted, despite ample evidence to the contrary. López Obrador, who is popular in Mexico and among Mexicans living in the United States, threatened to weaponize U.S. Latino voters against the Republican Party if they don’t stop their calls for military intervention in Mexico.
“If they don’t change their attitude and think that they are going to use Mexico for their propaganda, electoral and political purposes, we are going to call for people not to vote for that party,” he said.
