The organization Ukrainian Jersey City has transformed from a cultural club into a volunteer organization to meet the need.
She was the president of an association of retired energy industry workers in Ukraine, some of whom were disabled and couldn’t get out of the country. But as grocery stores ran out of food, pharmacies ran out of medication, and her granddaughter, Jersey City Board of Education Trustee Natalia Ioffe continued urging her, she realized that the time had come.
Now Tomash is living with Ioffe and “trying to tell myself that I’m on vacation” and going back to Ukraine soon, she said in Russian, with Ioffe translating. Oksana Condon, one of the group’s founders, managed to get her mother and two younger sisters, 13 and 14 years old, safely out of Ukraine when the war broke out. Condon has been in the U.S. since 2006.
She drove first to Slovakia and then over the Carpathian Mountains to the Polish border. Waiting in line to cross, she was approached by a Slovak volunteer who offered her a nearby Airbnb for free — an offer she couldn’t pass up after travelling nonstop, without even eating, for nearly 36 hours. Ukrainian Jersey City’s top priority in the past few weeks has been finding shelter for everyone “wherever we can place them,” Condon said.
