Dr. Ken Murray from Neils Harbour has officially, as of a week ago, announced his retirement after a 50-year medical career. CONTRIBUTEDNEILS HARBOUR — Several years ago, Dr. Ken Murray began contemplating retirement from his long-running medical career but wound up postponing that idea — twice — because there wasn’t really anyone who could replace him at his northeastern Cape Breton community clinic.
Born in Alberta but raised in Halifax, Murray graduated from Dalhousie Medical School. When the opportunity arose to work in a rural community, he chose Neils Harbour in part because of his parents’ strong ties to Cape Breton. In 1974, Murray got married. Two years after that, he and his wife Linda welcomed their first child. By 1976, he said, “we more or less decided that this was a good place to live. And the landscape, the scenery, opportunities for hiking and outdoor recreation make this place really special.
“My wife made a little noise about that,” Murray said. “And it got attention in the legislature. Because you’re dealing with prospective rural doctors.”
