African Union members vow a massive increase in fertilisers – again

African countries want to provide at least 70% of smallholder farmers with fertiliser in the next 10 years.

African heads of state meeting in Kenya on Thursday vowed to triple production and distribution of certified-quality organic and inorganic fertilisers by 2034.Through this initiative, they said they want to"improve access and affordability for smallholder farmers". In 2006, African countries signed the Abuja Declaration on Fertiliser for the African Green Revolution.

The majority of AU countries were"still over-dependent on imported fertilisers, especially non-phosphate-based fertilisers, which expose Africa to external market shocks and price volatility"."Some African countries produce fertilisers, but we depend mostly on imported fertilisers, making them very expensive for our farmers.
