African students in Tunisia demand action following surge of racist attacks by LeahMahon_
The unrest comes after Tunisian President Kais Saied said Africans were trying to “change the demographic makeup” of the country
There are reports that Black students based in the North-African country have been spat at and removed from their homes with some reporting that they are fearful to leave their homes. He added that it was in their motives to make the north-African region “just another African country that doesn’t belong to the Arab and Islamic nations any more”.
Christian Kwongang, President of the AESAT, an association representing sub-Saharan African students in Tunisia, told“The numbers are quite fluctuating. There are 400 arrests. There are more than 40 to 50 students who remained in detention in police stations during the last two or three weeks, and therefore went directly to prison. Fortunately, most of them have been released,” he said.
African students are reported to make up an “overwhelming majority” in the country and numbers have increased five-fold to 9,000 this year since 2011.
