Aid agencies warn that farmers could reduce planting of staple grains as prices of fertiliser soar

Fertiliser manufacturer Omnia Holdings says African governments are increasing support for smallholder farmers amid fears that input costs, driven higher after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, could cut crop production and worsen food insecurity.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which are both major fertiliser exporters, has accelerated price increases that were triggered by Covid-induced supply chain disruptions. According to Omnia, prices of fertiliser input materials have gone up by between 200% and 400% since January 2021. Omnia Holdings CEO Seelan Gobalsamy told Reuters in an interview that fears of fertiliser shortages were driving demand ahead of the planting season.
