Analysts predict a surge in Africa's economic growth, driven by the emergence of young leaders and the anticipated appointment of a new African Union (AU) chair from East Africa. Despite challenges like wars and corruption, the continent shows promise with high-growth countries emerging. The incoming AU chair is expected to prioritize Pan-Africanism and combat corruption.
Despite ongoing challenges, Africa 's economic growth is projected to increase, fueled by young leadership and the anticipated appointment of a new Africa n Union (AU) chair from East Africa , according to analysts. Although certain regions of the continent grapple with conflicts, corrupt governance, and electoral irregularities, Africa is poised for economic expansion. Political analysts believe the emergence of assertive young leaders will signal the end of the era dominated by octogenarians.
Next month, the African Union (AU) will select a new chair. One expert predicts that the chosen individual will hail from the East African region. The AU Commission chair holds several key responsibilities, including overseeing the organization's administration, programs, finances, and advancing the AU's objectives. Professor Dirk Kotzé, from the University of South Africa's department of political science, indicated that preparations and campaigning are already underway. 'There is a prevailing expectation that someone from East Africa will assume the chairmanship, although some southern African countries have expressed interest in the role,' said Kotzé. 'There are caucuses within regions, and once they reach a consensus on a candidate, the nomination is proposed.' Dr. Nkosazana-Dlamini Zuma served as an exception, as traditionally, the candidate should not originate from a powerful nation but rather from a smaller one. However, her successful campaign for this strategically important position, where she defeated Jean Ping of Gabon, demonstrated a shift in this traditional pattern. Addressing the ongoing conflicts on the continent, Kotzé stated that the AU is 'supposed to establish a permanent standby unit to respond rapidly to security threats. This initiative has been in development for many years.' Regarding Africa's economic growth, independent political analyst Sandile Swana remarked that while the AU Vision 2063 is 'not necessarily on track', the list of high-growth and high-performing countries within the continent offers a glimmer of hope. 'If not for the mismanagement of the South African economy, which serves as the engine of SADC, the SADC region could also be a strong economic performer,' Swana stated. 'There are smaller countries that are performing exceptionally well, achieving GDP growth rates of 6%.' Swana expressed hope that the incoming chair will champion Pan-Africanism and indigenous progress in Africa. He noted that the AU has not been as effective as it could be, with the primary concern being corruption among older leaders.
