The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which backs vaccine development, is not directly supporting the roll out as it feels that other tools to fight malaria as well as other vaccines being tested may be a better use of funds,RTS,S, developed by pharmaceutical company GSK, has been more than three decades in the making.

The country’s national malaria control programme manager Dr Michael Kayange told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme that the vaccine should now prevent some of these deaths.
